Easy Homemade Taco Seasoning
Taco Tuesday has become quite a hit in our house this year.
My kids are picky. They generally do not like one food to touch another food, but that all changed last Fall on a trip to my alma mater, the University of Florida, when two very hungry kids tasted their first tacos.
Maybe that’s the trick. Starve them a little, walk a few miles and then plop down at a great taco joint that only serves tacos and ask them what they want for lunch. The only option was tacos, so begrudgingly they ate tacos … and ate tacos, and ate tacos. Spicy ones too. We were blown away, and thrilled all at the same time.
So, now to celebrate this new food group addition to our repertoire, we celebrate the taco each Tuesday, and the kids gobble them up.
Taco Tuesday has also led me to make this not so spicy homemade taco seasoning. No chemicals, no preservatives, nothing I can’t pronounce on the label, nothing I have to make a special trip to the store for to buy.
Forget that packet of premixed taco seasonings. You can make great tacos all on your own. Get the kids involved and let them help mix it up. Your kiddos and whole family will be fans for sure.
Enough for 1 large skillet of taco meat
1 tablespoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano (or mixed italian herbs)
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon Kosher salt or sea salt
To add some heat: (Optional)
1 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
In a small bowl mix together all the ingredients. Store in an airtight container
To make tacos:
Brown your taco meat (Ground Chuck or Ground Chicken work great)
Drain any excess fat from the pan.
Add 1 cup of water
Sprinkle seasoning mix evenly over the meat, stir and and simmer.
Serve with hard or soft taco shells, rice and any fixings you prefer.
Enjoy Taco Tuesday!
