Food Revolution Day Orlando Showcased Orlando’s Burgeoning Real Food Community

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I volunteered to be a local lead here in Orlando for the Food Revolution Foundation.  Through the dedication of some very wonderful partners, A Local Folkus, Slow Food Orlando and Edible Orlando, we were able to pull together a Food Revolution Day event on May 19 and it was a great success!

The day showcased a beautiful Urban Farm here in the Winter Park area ran by A Local Folkus, a wonderful team that is bringing harvest festivals to our area, as well as some exciting real food options and events, and farm-to-table cooking demonstrations by the stupendous Chef Dawn Viola, Sarah Cahill and Eliza Scarpa.  These amazing women brought their varying talents to the day by showing our event guests how to make easy and beautifully healthy foods directly from the garden.

Florida Hospital’s Mission: FIT Possible program had a plethora of activities for the kids … including races, hopscotch and special balancing and food hide and seek games.  (We had to literally pull munchkin away from the games when the time came).

Great donors including Winter Park Whole Foods, Audubon Park Community Market, Ethos Vegan Kitchen, The Spice & Tea Exchange and Sarah Cahill provided prizes for our fundraising raffle — with the grand prize provided by Loews Hotels for a night’s stay and dining at the beautiful Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando.

The generosity of my community astounded me in putting together this event.  So, thank you each and every partner  for  your time, your efforts and your dedication to the Food Revolution mission.

With that being said, however, the most exciting aspect of the day for me was how so many people of different walks of life and varying interests could be brought together by the idea that we, as humans and as Americans, deserve and should fight for better nutrition and better food every single day.

It is not just about taste and eating food we like, it is about teaching everyone – adults and children alike – that real food is better, it is accessible and attainable … it just requires a little bit of knowledge and bridge building throughout our society to be possible.

I am already excited for what Food Revolution Day 2013 will bring, but in the meantime …

Balancing the busy demands of career and family, Julia lives with her husband and daughter in Orlando, Florida.
