Unperplex your Eczema ~ Theraplex

Tips for coping with Eczema and allergic skin in children and adults

One thing I know for sure, dealing with childhood Eczema is tough. It is a constant battle, and when the Eczema is coupled with allergies, yikes. It can get messy and be downright painful for our little ones.

Both of my girls inherited so many lovely things from their father. Beautiful long dark eyelashes. A giggle that will bring you to tears.  A love for cooking and exploring, but, unfortunately they also got his sensitive skin and eczema. Princess has fortunately grown out of it. Madame Butterfly however, has not been so fortunate yet. But, we do have a fabulous partner in our battle to keep her itchies in check and her skin as calm and un-inflamed as possible. Theraplex Emollient. (theraplex.com) or as she calls it “loshie”.

Introduced to us via a dermatologist when Princess was an infant, this product required no prescription and has none of the unwanted side effects that accompany many Eczema related Rx products. You can use as much of it as your little heart desires. You can use it as frequently as your little one needs. But, the best part is it actually works. Your allergist won’t have a clue about it. Your pediatrician will say, “Thera what?”, but please please try this product.

Theraplex is an emollient, meaning it is a very thick and concentrated, non-greasy moisturizer. It is for severely dry skin, i.e. my little ones Eczema prone knees, elbows and wrists. How does it work? Well, it forms a semi-permeable layer that soothes and softens skin against environmental drying. For my little airborne allergy and Eczema sufferer what that boils down to is that it provides her skin the barrier that it is lacking, while allowing healing for any current flaring Eczema skin that may be going on. It also allows her skin to breathe and does not interfere with normal perspiration, which in Florida is VERY important because it is stinking hot here much of the year.

You can order it online, or you can request that your local Pharmacist order it for you. It is on the expensive side, about $22 per container, but after using it for over 6 years now, I suggest you give it a go. It has helped our little ones in so many ways over the years. We have avoided countless skin infections, which can occur if Eczema goes untreated. We have also been able to now teach our kids to reach for the Theraplex, instead of mindlessly scratching when their Eczema shows it’s ugly and painful face. The moment a “itchy spot” shows itself, they reach for their “loshie”. I keep it in their backpacks. I keep it in the car. I have a sample packet in my purse at all times, and pass it out to anyone who may mention a skin issue or sensitivity to me.

The key is to use it, and use it frequently. Each bath ends with a whole body lathering while she is still damp, concentrating on any irritated spots. This helps lock in moisture naturally. Each morning before getting all gussied up for school, Madame Butterfly gets a coating of “loshie” under her cloths. After school, I check in with her and reapply to any hot spots. After playing at the park or ourside, we cool off and again reapply where needed. This may seem like overkill, but if you have a child with Eczema their skin is your battle field. You can be on the defensive and constantly at the doctor forced to use medication with crazy side effects, or on the offensive. I prefer to have the ball. Our tactic, get the Eczema before it gets her.

Disclosure: We love Theraplex, have for years and bought all of it ourselves.
